Join AFEK!

AFEK was founded in May 2009 as a place for F-Visa holders in South Korea to meet and discuss the issues that relevant to our unique situation. There had never been a private place for F-Visa holders to congregate online until AFEK was formed. AFEK continues to provide a private community for F-Visa holders, and is one that continues to thrive due to the expertise of our core-membership base: the long-term expatriate resident of Korea.

The AFEK website prides itself on being a place where people can engage in frank and honest discussion about being an expat in Korea. You should only join AFEK if you are happy with the following conditions:

  • Honest expression of opinions and experiences
  • Minimal censorship, minimal post deletion, and minimal moderation
  • A clear and simple TOS, that you are expected you to follow at all times
  • Because AFEK requires proof of ID in order to join, there is little chance of a user being able to create a sock account, and problematic users are unable to rejoin the site, should their account be suspended.
  • AFEK is a "share and share alike" community. All members are expected to make some contribution to the community.

The above principles serve to make AFEK a place where most users treat each other with respect.

Here is a breakdown of the AFEK application procedure:

  • Prepare your proofs (see below).
  • Complete the registration form.
  • Read the email you receive, and follow the instructions for submitting your proofs.

Once you have done all of the above, an Administrator will upgrade your account. The inbox is checked periodically throughout the day on most days, but on occasion it could take up to 24 hours for your account to be upgraded. Upgrades are silent (you are not notified) so you should try logging in every few hours after you have submitted proofs.

CHOOSE YOUR USERNAME CAREFULLY! IT CANNOT BE EASILY CHANGED AT A LATER DATE. DO NOT USE YOUR REAL NAME UNLESS YOU ARE HAPPY FOR OTHERS TO SEE IT!

Acceptable proof for F-2/4/5/6 Visa holders:

An ARC Card must be used. Please feel free to edit out your photo, your Registration number (please leave the DOB intact) and your name (leave the initials intact). Do not edit out any more information than in the example given above. YOUR CARD MUST CLEARLY SHOW F-VISA STATUS ON THE FRONT OR BACK!

3rd August 2014: As stated above. An ARC MUST BE USED. A visa stamp, application for visa, acknowledgement of application for an ARC or absolutely anything else you may think is good enough IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Over the past 6 months, approximately 1 in 4 registrations have been made using something other than an ARC as proof. NONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED. If you make an application using anything other than ARC card, 2 things will happen.

1. Your application will be completely ignored, with absolutely no communication telling you why it was ignored.
2. You will not be able to make a new account because your username/email will already be logged on the system.

PROOFS MUST BE IN JPG OR PNG FORMAT.

YOU CAN PROVIDE A 300DPI COLOUR SCAN OR HIGH QUALITY COLOUR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPH.

YOUR DOB AND INITIALS WILL BE RETAINED AS A SECURITY MEASURE IN ORDER TO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM CREATING DUPLICATE ACCOUNTS.
